If you’re interested in a smile makeover in Durham, NC, or the greater Research Triangle area, dental veneers from Max Dental Studio may be exactly what you need! With a set of veneers from Dr. Mauro Nunes and our team, you can cover up almost any cosmetic flaw with your smile.

But before you commit to treatment, it’s natural to have questions about veneers. What are they? Are there different types available? How much do they cost? And why do so many people choose veneers for their smile makeovers? In this comprehensive guide, we’ll give you all of the answers you need to make your choice with confidence.

What Are Veneers? Understanding The Basics

Veneers are very thin, tooth-colored layers of porcelain or composite material. They are designed to cover up the front surface of a tooth. By doing so, veneers can hide flaws like chips and stains, alter the shape of the tooth, and create a more pleasing and confident smile.

The process of getting veneers typically takes two visits to Max Dental Studio. At your first visit, Dr. Mauro Nunes will prepare your teeth by removing a small amount of tooth material. Then, he will take digital impressions of your teeth. Dr. Nunes will use these scans to design your veneers, then send the finalized designs to be manufactured in a dental lab. You’ll be sent home with a set of temporary veneers to cover up your teeth.

Then, in a few weeks, your final set of veneers will arrive at our office. Dr. Nunes will remove your temporary teeth, check your permanent dental veneers to make sure the fit is perfect, and then bond them in place with dental cement. The final step is to polish your teeth to make sure your new smile looks its very best!

It’s important to note that, unlike dental crowns, dental veneers are only cosmetic. They are not meant to treat any serious oral health issues like cavities or infected teeth. So in order to get veneers, you must have a smile that’s free of decay, gum disease, and other common oral health issues.

The Most Common Types Of Veneers – Explained

At Max Dental Studio, we primarily provide porcelain veneers. However, there are a few different types of veneers available. Here’s a quick overview of the most popular types of veneers used in dentistry today:

Porcelain veneers

Porcelain veneers are made from a very strong, durable, and stain-resistant ceramic material. They are extremely popular because they are the most natural-looking option. Porcelain is very similar to natural enamel in color, translucency, and overall appearance, which provides seamless results.

Porcelain veneers are generally the most expensive type of veneer. However, they have some other benefits that mean they're worth the investment. They last longer than any other type of veneer, with a typical lifespan of 10-20 years. They are completely stain-resistant, too. This means that your new smile will look bright for years to come, with no stains from coffee, tea, or any other foods or drinks.

No-prep veneers

No-prep veneers, also sometimes called “minimal prep” veneers or known by the brand name “Lumineers,” are also made of porcelain. The big difference between no-prep veneers and traditional veneers is their thickness. No-prep veneers are extremely thin yet strong, which means they can often be placed with minimal enamel removal, or none at all.

No-prep veneers share most of their benefits with porcelain veneers. They are very strong, resist stains, and have a similar 10-20 year lifespan with proper care. However, since they're thinner, they may not be quite as durable as thicker traditional porcelain veneers. No-prep veneers are also usually more expensive, and not everyone qualifies for treatment.

Composite veneers

Composite veneers are made from a mixture of resin and glass particles. This is very similar to the material used for tooth-colored fillings. Composite resin can be matched very closely to the color of your existing teeth, ensuring a seamless result.

The primary benefit of composite veneers is that they are cheaper than porcelain. However, they do have some drawbacks. They do not last as long, with a typical lifespan of 5-10 years. Composite isn’t as strong and is more prone to staining unless you maintain good oral hygiene.

Direct composite veneers (dental bonding)

Sometimes known as “direct composite veneers,” dental bonding is very different from other types of veneers. In this procedure, composite material is applied directly to your teeth to reshape them, cover up stains, and enhance your smile. There’s no need to work with an outside dental lab.

This also means that direct composite veneers are typically the least expensive option for enhancing your smile. They also do not require any enamel removal, in most cases. However, this procedure also has the shortest lifespan of about 5-7 years.

Snap-on veneers

Snap-on veneers are a type of temporary veneer. They are made of plastic and snap onto your teeth similarly to a mouthguard or retainer. While they can enhance your smile for special occasions, they are not a great choice for daily wear.

The biggest benefit of snap-on veneers is that they are extremely affordable, especially if you’re covering up lots of your natural teeth. However, they have lots of drawbacks. Snap-on veneers require inconvenient maintenance, have a short lifespan, and may be bulky or uncomfortable to wear.

The Benefits Of Choosing Dental Veneers

Wondering why veneers are such a popular choice for smile makeovers? Here are just a few reasons that patients choose to enhance their teeth with veneers at Max Dental Studio:

  • Enjoy an all-in-one smile makeover – Veneers are extremely versatile. They can be used to treat almost any cosmetic flaw, including chipped teeth, misshapen teeth, uneven teeth, gaps, deep stains, and even slightly crooked or crowded teeth. This makes it easy to completely transform your smile!

  • Natural look and feel – At Max Dental Studio, you’ll work closely with Dr. Nunes to determine the final shape, shade, and overall appearance of your new smile. The result is a set of teeth that looks realistic and feels natural, too.

  • Easy to care for – You can treat your new veneers just like normal teeth. Make sure you brush twice a day and floss once daily, and don’t skip your six-month teeth cleanings and oral exams at Max Dental Studio. Along with a few other precautions like avoiding chewing on non-food objects (such as pens and pencils), your new veneers will require very little special care.

  • Feel great about your smile again – If you don’t like how your smile looks because of gaps, stains, uneven teeth, or any other cosmetic issue, veneers can be truly life-changing. Once your veneers are in place, you can smile proudly for photos, speak confidently among your coworkers and colleagues, and laugh without ever feeling embarrassed or self-conscious about your teeth.

How Much Do Veneers Cost?

The cost of dental veneers depends on the type of veneer you choose, how many teeth you’re treating, your oral health, and a wide variety of other factors. It’s impossible to get an accurate quote until you’ve seen a dentist like Dr. Mauro Nunes for a cosmetic consultation.

Generally speaking, though, porcelain veneers and no-prep veneers like Lumineers are the most expensive, yet long-lasting option. Composite veneers are less expensive than porcelain in most cases, but do not last as long.

Direct composite veneers (dental bonding) are cheaper than lab-made composite veneers, making them a good option if you’re on a tight budget. Plastic snap-on veneers are even more affordable, but are not a good long-term solution for cosmetic concerns since they're removable, fragile, and don’t look very natural.
